This is a special episode of the Game Theory Today podcast focusing on the attempted overthrow of the United States government on January 6, 2021, a day that will go down in history beneath the attack on Ft. Sumter in the annals of American treachery. A conspiracy against democracy, having been fomented for years, resulted in a surprise attack against the United States Federal government, the first such assault to reach America’s capitol since 1812. Like when the assault on Sumter occurred, there was the assumption in the capital that both sides were merely Americans with strongly different feeling about the direction of democracy. But when the shots were fired, a disturbing reality was revealed where one side intended to end the rule of law at the point of a gun. Civilians in Charleston cheered. And insurrectionists consigned hundreds of thousands to their death to pursue a fever dream. It took four years of this nation’s worst internal strife to wrench back under control. The incomplete efforts to mediate that damage have haunted us to this day, and have been used as fodder for enemies foreign and domestic to attack America culturally and politically.
