When your audience is really a computer

I saw this today from @faris and thought – absolutely! It’s sounds weird, right? Isn’t a “bot” really “fake internet traffic?” Not anymore.

Your audience is ultimately real people, but those people increasingly depend on algorithms that filter their stream of information. A miniscule part of our Internet consumption is direct; much more often, we read what is suggested to us by a computer algorithm that wants to serve content that is “relevant for us.”

The new game, therefore, for all content producers is to impress the bots first, then the audience.

Weird, right? Welcome to 2015.
